Born Alfred Jesse Smith on July 26, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wood's family relocated to California during his childhood. He attended Compton High School, where he excelled in track and field, and later pursued higher education at East Los Angeles College. Inspired by artists like Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, he honed his musical talents, becoming a proficient pianist and songwriter.
In 1967, under the stage name Brenton Wood, he achieved significant success with "The Oogum Boogum Song," which reached No. 34 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and "Gimme Little Sign," peaking at No. 9. These tracks became emblematic of the 1960s soul and R&B scene, with their infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Over his career, Wood released nine studio albums, with his music featuring in various films and television shows, including "Almost Famous" and "Don't Worry Darling."

In recent years, Wood embarked on a farewell tour titled "Catch You on the Rebound: The Last Tour." However, due to declining health, he postponed several dates.
